TAIPEI, Taiwan ? A surgeon says he operated on former Taiwanese President Lee Teng-hui to remove a cancerous tumor from his colon.
Dr. Lin Chen-kuo said Wednesday the tumor was found during a routine checkup of the 88-year-old Lee. The surgeon said a decision on further treatment will depend on test results that are still pending.
Nicknamed Mr. Democracy, Lee oversaw democratic reforms in Taiwan and became the island's first directly elected leader in 1996.
He left office in 2000 but has remained active in politics. He set up the fringe Taiwan Solidarity Union to advocate a separate Taiwanese identity from China.
Taiwan and China split amid civil war in 1949. China still claims the self-ruled island a part of its own territory.
