Growing Up Geek: Philip Palermo

Welcome to Growing Up Geek, a feature where we take a look back at our youth, and tell stories of growing up to be the nerds that we are. This week, we have our very own Philip Palermo!

Growing Up Geek: Philip Palermo

In case you couldn't tell from that pirate / bandit / pimp / vampire pictured above, I sometimes have trouble making up my mind. It took me forever to decide what I wanted to be that Halloween -- figuring out what I wanted to be when I grew up has taken even longer.

It's strange to think that a few landmark tech purchases during my life helped make who I am today. Our family's first computer, the NES, a used DSLR -- just the simple act of bringing tech home and experimenting with it seemed to shape, reshape and re-reshape my projected career path.

SAfrican photographer who depicted apartheid dies

JOHANNESBURG (AP) ? Alfred Kumalo, a South African photographer whose work chronicled the brutalities of apartheid and the rise of Nelson Mandela, died of renal failure in a Johannesburg hospital on Sunday night, the ruling party said Monday.

The African National Congress described Kumalo as a "rare and significant talent that was pivotal in raising social consciousness and exposing the brutality of the apartheid administration."

He was 82.

"South Africa has lost a self-taught giant in the media field who still bears the scars of torture and mental scars of continuous detentions by the apartheid security forces," the ANC said. "The (ANC) bows its head in honor of a singularly brave and daring South African who bequeathed our country and future generations historic moments captured in his camera."

Kumalo, whose work graces museum walls across South Africa, was perhaps best known for his photos of Nelson and Winnie Mandela as a young couple. The photographer's career "mirrored the rise in Mr. Mandela's political career," said the Nelson Mandela Center of Memory. The center said Kumalo captured "many of the historic events in which (Mandela) played a key role."

The opposition Democratic Alliance similarly praised Kumalo, saying his work inspired South Africans with a message of hard work and integrity. "Mr. Kumalo was a photographer who had the courage to honestly reflect the reality of South African life," the DA said. "His photos provide a visual history of South Africa's struggle against the brutal apartheid regime and remind us of the importance of an independent media in exposing the excesses of the state."

Former South African President Thabo Mbeki said Kumalo's work made him "one of South Africa's eminent historians."

Kumalo, who started working as a photographer in 1951, first gained prominence at the renowned Drum magazine, a sophisticated publication that covered black life at a time when apartheid was intensifying its assault of black culture. He covered the Rivonia trial, in which Mandela was sentenced to life imprisonment, and was present again in 1994 when the anti-apartheid icon was sworn in as South Africa's first black president.

Greg Marinovich, a prominent South African photographer who covered the last days of apartheid, said Kumalo's work over the years was "legendary."

"This was a guy who had done it all, from hanging out with Muhammad Ali while shooting 'Rumble in the Jungle' (before turning down an offer to be Ali's personal photographer) to capturing Oliver Tambo ringside at a boxing match and then later at his treason trial," Marinovich said in a tribute in the Daily Maverick, a local newspaper published online. "He was particularly close to Nelson Mandela. He became Mandela's de facto official photographer when Nelson was in jail, chronicling the lives of his wife Winnie and the children Madiba could not watch grow up."

Kumalo had most recently started a photography school for poor children in Soweto, the scene of some of his best work over the years. There is also a Kumalo Museum of Photography in Soweto.

No-Fail Slow Cooker Pot Roast - Waterford, CT Patch

Crockpots or slow-cookers are great to use for many dishes, however, some such as meat dishes need a little extra prep work to get it right.

I have made this pot roast recipe many times and have tried to perfect it so the meat as well as the veggies come out tender all at the same time. Six hours on "high" for my crockpot seems to do the trick.

This recipe takes a little advance work and always makes a mess of my cook-top, but the end result of tasty, tender pot roast the whole family will enjoy is worth the clean up.

Slow-Cooker Pot Roast

Depending upon size of roast, serves 5-8

2-3 cups baby carrots (not sliced)

3-4 ribs of celery, cut into 1 inch pieces

One 3 to 5 pound pot roast (I used a 3 lb. boneless chuck roast)

salt and pepper

flour for dusting

1 T of vegetable oil

1 T butter

1 large onion, chopped

2 garlic cloves, minced

8 oz. package fresh mushrooms, sliced thick

1 T flour

1 T tomato paste or ketchup

2 1/2 cups chicken, beef or vegetable broth

Directions:

Place baby carrots and celery slices in the slow cooker.

Season roast with salt and pepper and lightly coat with flour. In a large stainless steel frying pan, heat vegetable oil until hot. (Try not to use a non-stick pan as you want a good browning on the roast).?

Brown the roast on all sides until evenly browned.? Place browned roast on top of carrots and celery in slow cooker.

In same frying pan, melt the butter and add the onions, sauteing for several minutes. Add the garlic and cook briefly, but don't let it brown. Add mushrooms, flour, tomato paste or ketchup, and broth and cook, stirring up any browned bits left from the roast. Stir well for a few minutes then carefully pour this mixture on top of the roast in the slow cooker.

Cover, and cook on high for 6 hours. After about 3 hours, you can turn the roast over if you desire (and are at home to do so) but it's not necessary.

When 6 hours is over, remove the roast and place on a rimmed cutting board. With the cover off the slow cooker, keep the temperature on high and stir the sauce, letting it thicken slightly. If desired, stir together one teaspoon each of butter and flour and add to sauce if it needs thickening.

To serve, slice pot roast into chucks and place on top of mashed potatoes or cooked egg noodles with the vegetables and gravy.

Olympic swimming star Missy Franklin commits to Cal ...

BERKELEY, Calif. (AP) ? Olympic star Missy Franklin has verbally committed to attend the University of California, ending the pursuit of one of the most sought after swimming recruits.

"Committed to swim at Cal Berkeley! I am officially a baby Golden Bear?????? I am so honored to be a part of such a special team! (hash)GoBears," Franklin tweeted Saturday.

Franklin will be reunited with Cal coach Teri McKeever, who directed the U.S. women's team at the London Olympics, where Franklin won five medals. The 17-year-old won the 100- and 200-meter backstroke events, earned gold medals in the 400 medley and 800 freestyle relays, and a bronze in the 400 freestyle relay.

Franklin will join Olympic teammate Rachel Bootsma on the Bears. Natalie Coughlin and Dana Vollmer, two of her other Olympic teammates, starred at Cal.

Franklin, a senior at Regis Jesuit High in Aurora, Colo., had made earlier recruiting visits to Georgia and Texas. As a result of her decision, Franklin won't make a scheduled visit to Southern California.

Cal can't comment on the commitment until Franklin signs a letter of intent.

Franklin only plans to swim collegiately for her first two years, and then will turn pro in 2015, ahead of the 2016 Rio Olympics, according to Swimming World.

Volkswagen Plans Two New SUVs, Golf ... - Automotive Blogs

Volkswagen is bridging the Tiguan with two SUVs, one bigger and one smaller. And the new Golf will move to North America for its new home?either in Chattanooga alongside the Passat or in Mexico alongside the Beetle.

But first, those Tiguan stablemates. One will slot between the Tiguan and the Touareg, ?to appeal to US drivers,? says Bloomberg Businessweek. To that end, it will have seating for seven and compete against traditional minivans?and big people-haulers like the Honda Pilot and Chevrolet Traverse?in an effort to erase Volkswagen?s lackluster lash-up with Chrysler.

The other SUV will be smaller than the Tiguan, which makes one wonder how small it will really be, seeing as the Tiguan is based heavily on the Golf. The next Golf will be bigger, however, which gives both SUVs some breathing room. Of course, Volkswagen?s continued expansion in China and America will offset its five straight years of losses in Europe, so the more models the better.

Both will presumably also carry heretofore unpronounceable and incomprehensible names, beginning with the letter T.

Meanwhile, that new Golf we showed you in Paris will make its way to a factory here; Chattanooga seems the obvious choice, but it?s already at capacity, because people really love the Passat. ?If we expand there,? said CEO Martin Winterkorn, ?an SUV that ends up roomier than the Tiguan would have a good shot.?

So, Puebla it is. The Volkswagen plant in Mexico already builds Jettas and Beetles for North America, so the Golf would feel right at home just as it is in the Volkswagen lineup. Production would start in 2014 just as it goes on sale here, which is a very important step for Volkswagen?s future sales goals.

The Golf is currently built in Germany in two locations, but production is planned for China, too.

Afghan police school tries to fix struggling force

KABUL (AP) ? At the gate to the National Police Academy, on the western edge of the Afghan capital, the guard's rifle bolts into firing position. "Stop!" he shouts.

It's 4 a.m., the street lights are not working and the guard's superiors had neglected to tell him that the red Toyota Corolla would be arriving. Time and again, suicide bombers have attacked Afghanistan's police and army outposts. So one of the first lessons taught at the academy is diligence.

The readiness of Afghanistan's security forces is central to U.S. and NATO plans to withdraw all forces from the country by the end of 2014, and the academy's new commander wants to help turn around a 146,000-strong national police force long riddled with corruption, incompetence and factional rivalries.

Such problems are not always acknowledged publicly. On Thursday, President Hamid Karzai said that his military and police are prepared to take full responsibility for security if the American-led international coalition decides to speed up the handover. And a statement released this week by the NATO-led force, ISAF, called the Afghan National Army the most respected institution in the country and said "the Afghan national police also rank highly."

But the National Police Academy's director, Mullah Dad Pazoish, presents a different viewpoint.

"There are police who don't even know the meaning of the word 'police,'" Pazoish said in a recent interview. "We have generals who have no training. They are the jihadi commanders."

International observers warn that the largely illiterate police force will disintegrate after 2014 into factional militias more loyal to local warlords than to the state.

There are also questions about the ability of the Afghan army, which continues to suffer from a high rate of attrition.

A report released this month by the Brussels-based International Crisis Group concluded that Afghan security forces are not even close to being ready to take over security nationwide. "Only 7 percent of the army and 9 percent of the national police units are considered capable of independent action even with advisers," the report stated.

And Karzai himself complained two weeks ago that Afghan forces are not getting the weapons they need from NATO allies, suggesting Afghanistan might have to go to other countries such as China and Russia to acquire them.

Little noticed amid the criticism is that the police have taken the heaviest casualties in the war. On average, nearly 10 police officers are killed or wounded every day, according to the ISAF statement.

The risks were clearly on the mind of the guard who recently pointed his weapon at the Toyota approaching the gates of the 70-year-old academy, the nation's oldest, a sprawling compound that harks back to a peaceful Afghanistan ruled by a monarchy.

Gen. Nawroz Khaliq, who took command of the academy eight months ago, wants to restore higher standards to the institution. A career cop with a receding hairline, Khaliq envisions an academy that will create a new generation of policemen who understand the law and are committed to upholding it.

"In 10 years this academy I promise will be as good as any in the world," he said inside his comfortable office across from the parade grounds. A giant picture of Karzai hangs on the wall. A bouquet of dusty plastic flowers dominates a small bookcase, and plush couches line the walls.

Khaliq said the withdrawal of foreign forces in 2014 could be an opportunity for Afghans to rise to the occasion and prove themselves, but he acknowledged that the job ahead is colossal.

After the collapse of the Taliban regime in 2001, the academy's traditional three-year program was mostly supplanted with a new eight-week training course in the rush to turn out uniformed policemen. Large sections of the police were drawn from the ranks of militias whose warlord leaders sit in the Afghan parliament. Others came from remote villages. Few had seen the inside of a school.

Standards for the eight-week police training program are low, according to Khaliq. There is no educational requirement, and new recruits don't even have to be able to sign their name, just provide their fingerprints. They do, however, need to be recommended by a government official, who vouches they are neither Taliban nor a criminal.

Falaq Niaz Samedi, a lawyer and law professor at the academy, said government officials promote poor-quality candidates and then blame the academy for turning out corrupt police.

"I was at a seminar when the deputy (interior) minister said to me, 'All police are robbers,' but I told him, 'Police are not the robbers. It is you people who are bringing in the robbers. You take all those people that you send out and the police will not be robbers.'"

When he arrived on the job, Khaliq said he was surprised to find only a handful of students in the three-year program. The academy's entrance exam had also been suspended for two years.

He immediately held nationwide exams in which 8,257 men took part. Nine hundred were selected for the academy.

But a discouraged-looking Khaliq said the government is already applying pressure to reduce the standards for entrance. Currently recruits have to have a Grade 12 education and be 18 to 25 years old, but the government wants to increase the upper age limit to 35 ? presumably to accommodate more unemployed militiamen.

Khaliq said 30 years of war have devastated the country's education system and that even high school graduates today are poorly educated. Nevertheless, Khaliq is trying to shore up standards, increasing the three-year program to four to allow for one year of specialization. The curriculum has been expanded to include human rights, prisoner treatment and gender studies.

Nearly 30 women are enrolled at the academy. They study with their male counterparts but train separately and eat their lunch behind a giant white curtain, hidden from the hundreds of men in the cavernous dining halls. The female police officers are trained to protect and search other women. They are not deployed to outposts and checkpoints. At the academy they wear the gray uniform, with a longer tunic and a black headscarf.

A female recruit who goes by only one name, Spushmai, said she does not fear retaliation from insurgents who advocate a strict code of conduct for women, but that "we will be very worried after the foreigners leave."

Another fresh recruit, who wanted to practice his English, spoke haltingly.

"We are the future. We will have real training and education," said Azim Aga, 18, from northern Baghlan province. "Right now the police who are on the street are not educated and are from the jihad," a reference to Afghanistan's successive wars. "We will be proud policemen."

But pride alone will not defeat the militants.

In one Taliban attack on a police station this month, only two of the four officers had weapons, according to Khaliq. He said police have more vehicles than weapons and that barely 60 percent of the police out on the streets and in the rural outback have communications equipment.

Khaliq, who acknowledged the mountain of criticism heaped on the police, said they also make some of the greatest sacrifices, living among the insurgents, not knowing if their neighbor is Taliban.

This month in Ghazni province, Zalmai Faizi, a seven-year veteran of the national police force, buried his 5-year-old daughter and 18-year-old son. Taliban militants shot and killed them both as they sat in his parked car outside the family's home.

Faizi's voice broke, his eyes watered and he bit his lip as he recounted the killing in an interview. For a moment he couldn't speak. He clenched his fist and in a hushed voice said: "I don't want anyone to see me cry, because it will give strength to my enemies and hurt the morale of our policemen."

Celestial Marathon on Saturday: How to Watch Astronomy Day Online

An online observatory will webcast a free celestial marathon on Saturday (Oct. 20) to mark Astronomy Day, telling the story of our universe with the help of live shots from professional-quality telescopes.

The online Slooh Space Camera will air 11 consecutive hours of free cosmic programming beginning at 3:30 p.m. EDT (1930 GMT). Viewers can watch live on their computers or iOS/Android mobile devices.

The broadcast will take viewers on a tour of some of the universe's most spectacular sights, from dusty nebulas to supernova explosions that mark the death of huge, hot-burning stars to the planets and moons of our own solar system. In addition to Astronomy Day, the event coincides with the peak of the annual Orionid meteor shower, which will be at its best overnight on Saturday and Sunday (Oct. 20 and 21).?

Live shots of such cosmic phenomena will be provided by an observatory in the Canary Islands, off the west coast of Africa, Slooh officials said. The webcast can be accessed at the Slooh Space Camera here:?http://events.slooh.com/.

Slooh outreach coordinator Paul Cox will host the broadcast. He'll be joined by several guests, including author and Astronomy magazine columnist Bob Berman.

"Even with the use of Slooh's patented real-time imaging system, this is going to be incredibly challenging event ? and several people have warned me against it," Cox said in a statement. "However, we're passionate about bringing live astronomy to a wider audience and making science more accessible. To paraphrase a famous speech, 'We choose to do these things, not because they are easy, but because they are hard!'"

Slooh is putting the broadcast together to mark Astronomy Day, a twice-yearly celebration that aims to share the joys of astronomy with the general population. To see if there's an event occuring near you on Saturday, check out the Astronomy Day website.

"I am proud to be part of this marathon-of-the-universe," Berman said. "It?s the first time in history that people everywhere can observe dozens of full-color celestial splendors in real time, free on Slooh?s homepage, as tracked by major telescopes and displayed on their home monitor or portable device. This may mark a new era in the appreciation of our cosmos."

Firefly Helps Customer Service Reps Achieve Customer Satisfaction

A new company called Firefly offers a product that helps make customer service calls a more pleasant experience for both parties. Well-suited for customer service representatives at small or medium companies, Firefly helps reps show customers how to use the website and can help improve customer satisfaction through sharing screens.

?Firefly does instant browser-sharing to help companies provide great customer support,? Dan Shipper, co-founder, informed RESCUECOM. ?Let?s say a customer is having a problem with your website. With Firefly, a customer representative can easily connect to their screen and show them around the website using a series of highlights.?

When a rep is talking to a customer and wants to point out a specific place on the website, the highlighting tool comes into play, so there is no doubt about the reference or where to click. The highlighting tool is compatible with all major browsers, so the rep and the customer see the same screen.

Three University of Pennsylvania undergraduates created Firefly. The other co-founders are Patrick Leahy and Justin Meltzer.

?Firefly is differentiated from more traditional screen sharing like GoToMeeting in two key ways,? Shipper stated. ?First, it is completely download-free and runs completely in the browser with JavaScript. That means that no time is wasted installing complicated software or downloading plug-ins. Firefly just works.?

?Just one snippet of code? is all it takes to add Firefly to a website, according to the company.

?Second, Firefly is much more private than traditional screen sharing,? Shipper continued. ?During a browser-sharing session a customer representative can only see what?s on the customer?s web page, not what?s on the customer?s computer. This provides a much more secure screen-sharing experience for the customer.?

Reps can watch customers fill out a form and question anything that may not be correct, nipping problems in the bud. If a password is ever involved, it does not appear to the company rep or anywhere on the company system, in another way Firefly retains customer privacy.

Other Firefly features include working behind company firewalls and tracking call times.

Customer service representatives can also benefit from office computer repair and computer support from a reliable service provider such as RESCUECOM.

For infrequent users, 10 screen shares cost $10. The Firefly website calls the $29 per month per rep package the most popular, recommended for small to medium businesses. There is a 30-day money-back guarantee, with no long-term commitment required.

A 30-day free trial of Firefly is available. Firefly will also provide quotes for larger companies with many reps, customized to specific needs.

Firefly can shed light on customer service improvement.

The U.S.'s largest wireless carrier attained a 7.5 percent year-on-year growth in service revenues -- the money made through the cellular services it provides -- while retail revenues increased 7.9 percent year-on-year. Today's results follow a similarly strong performance in Q2.

The carrier says smartphone users contributed heavily to its earnings, noting that some 53 percent of its post-paid (contract) customers now used smart devices. Verizon continues to boast the country's largest 4G LTE network, which it says is now available to some 250 million people across the U.S.

"In the third quarter, Verizon continued to deliver double-digit earnings growth and strong cash generation, and we remain solidly on track to meet our financial objectives for the year," said Lowell McAdam, Verizon chairman and CEO. "With our 4G LTE network advantage, well-received Share Everything Plans and unmatched product portfolio, Verizon Wireless continues to do an outstanding job of balancing growth and profitability. Wireless achieved record profitability in a quarter in which we reported the highest number of retail postpaid gross and net adds in four years."

Verizon will hold its quarterly earnings call later this morning.

Earth-sized planet in Alpha Centauri an alien concept to many Earthlings

The alien planet?s existence suggests that others might lurk farther out from the star, just far enough for liquid water ? and possibly life ? to exist.

Scientists announced the existence of an Earth-size planet orbiting a star in neighboring Alpha Centauri, but back on the home planet, only half the people polled informally had heard of the star system. Still, most support the idea of sending a mission to explore the new discovery.

The scorched,?rocky planet has about Earth's mass, but circles the sun Alpha Centauri B at a distance of just 3.6 million miles? (6 million kilometers), making it likely that its surface is covered in molten lava. The alien planet?s existence suggests that others might lurk farther out from the star, just far enough for liquid water ? and possibly life ? to exist.??

Though the constellation is our next-door neighbor, many San Franciscans had never heard of it.

"I have no idea what it is," said Paul Thomas, a cook waiting for a bus here.

While more than half of the 13 people polled said that Alpha Centauri was a star system, only one knew it was about 4 light-years away from Earth.

None knew it would take about?40,000 years?to get there on a spacecraft like?NASA's Voyager 1, though guesses ranged from two days to 150,000 years. [Gallery: Nearby Alien Planet Alpha Centauri Bb]

"I would have known when I went to space camp when I was 9," said bartender Anya Aplin.

Despite the ignorance of our interstellar neighbors, most said they would definitely support sending a mission to study the new planet.

"Not everything starts out having a practical purpose, but along the way you discover things that turn out to be practical," said entrepreneur Jeff Lin. "The?Apollo?missions, they yielded things that were super-useful for human beings even though in the race to the moon, we didn't harvest moon rocks."

But first, scientists should get the costs down, determine whether the planet has an atmosphere, and develop?artificial gravity?to prevent the health problems of anti-gravity, people said.

Mary Beth Stone, a nonprofit worker, said an interstellar mission couldn't be justified unless Earthlings were in better shape.

"I think we should put some of the money that might be spent on that on taking care of the hungry and the homeless first," Stone said.

Others took a more expansive view of what should be considered before a trip.

"It depends on what the motivation is," said Paulette, an ordained Tibetan monk. "If it made all sentient beings happy, then we should go."

Though he just learned of the existence of Alpha Centauri?s and its alien planet, college student Pedro Navarro said he would still go if the travel time could be improved.

Many said safety concerns would need to be worked out first.

"I wouldn't want to be the first person ? I would want to make sure the return trip was pretty much guaranteed," said Ian Matthew, a financial analyst.

But comfort was key for software engineer Miriam Goldberg. "It depends on the amenities on the ship," she said.

Supernovas Create Radioactive Titanium

The most powerful star explosions in the universe can blast out far more freshly made radioactive titanium than has been suspected: up to 100 times the mass of the Earth, researchers say.

These new findings about this radioactive titanium production promise to shed light on the mysterious inner workings of these stellar outbursts and on how the elements that help make up everything from planets to people are generated.

The most powerful star explosions are supernovas, which are bright enough to briefly outshine their entire galaxies. The mind-boggling heat and force of these outbursts help forge the heavier elements, a process known as explosive nucleosynthesis.

Much remains uncertain about the extraordinarily complex processes that occur during supernovas. Astrophysicists often hope to learn more about them by analyzing the aftermaths of these explosions.

For their new study, scientists investigated the remnantsof a supernova seen in 1987. The SN 1987A star explosion took place in the fringes of the Tarantula Nebula in the Large Magellanic Cloud, a nearby dwarf galaxy, about 168,000 light-years from Earth.

It occurred when its star ran out of fuel and its core collapsed. (This is one of two processes that produce supernovas; in the other, a star gathers extra material from a neighbor, igniting a runaway nuclear reaction.)

The researchers focused on the radioactive isotope titanium-44 that SN 1987A generated. Computer models had suggested that "type II" supernovas such as SN1987A generated up to about 80 times as much titanium-44 as the mass of the Earth.

Using the European Space Agency's INTEGRAL satellite telescope, the scientists looked for wavelengths of X-rays most likely generated by this particular isotope of titanium. The levels of radiation they detected helped reveal how much of the radioactive metal was there.

"The amount of titanium-44 found corresponds to approximately 100 times the mass of the Earth,"? said study lead author Sergei Grebenev, an astrophysicist at the Space Research Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences in Moscow.

This vast amount of radioactive titanium is enough to power the emission of light from the supernova remnant over much of its lifetime.

The findings could lead to better models of supernovas and the way they forge elements.

"I am sure that our results will stimulate specialists in explosive nucleosynthesis to make new simulations and to study production of titanium-44 in more detail," Grebenev told SPACE.com. "It is of great importance for physics of supernovae and for the theory of element production in the universe."

The scientists detail their findings in the Oct. 18 issue of the journal Nature.

What I Can Do For You, There's No - euphoria1287 - LiveJournal

So, to start this, did anyone else notice that the lj userheads are Slender Man? Or could be, with a little black suit.

Okay, that wasn't how I wanted to start this, but alas. I know I don't post on here so often anymore, and it's kind of sad. I may make more of an effort to be around on here, even if lj is largely pretty dead, at least around these parts. I think the only people who I still talk to on here who read and reply to my posts are Therese, Ashley, and now Meg. You girls all rock, but you knew that.?

Friday marked three months of really working on my depression, and I'm really coming a long way. Well, not on Friday itself, that was fraught with emotion later on due mostly to PMS and me being a doofus, but in the past three months, I've really done a hell of a lot of work on myself, and I would think it shows. I'm happy, I'm confident, I'm content, I'm excitable, I'm sexy as all hell, I'm funny, I'm bouncy, I'm fun, I'm just awesome these days. I'm very proud of myself, and I celebrated with some sushi with my brother (well, incidentally, sushi day fell on the same day as Friday, but shhh).?

What else, what else. Work has been a bit annoying, to be honest, because I'm having a hard time tracking down anyone to talk to with the other paper regarding other stories and even when my most recent story will be run. It's a little frustrating, but I'm keeping busy regardless and always looking for new opportunities. Today I found this autism site that is looking for writers, and I thought that would be kinda cool even if I don't know anything about autism. But I liked the voice and tone of the site, and I love writing and am still looking for any paid opportunities out there. Next year is for focusing on landing a magazine or newspaper slot, permanently.

In terms of other writing, the grunge site is going really well. I have began writing more because I put some invisible, nonexistent pressure on myself to write on there daily, sometimes even a few times a day. Most of the time I average two posts a day, and the url never changed, so if you're friends with me on twitter, you get linked to all of my posts, since I retweet them all. Rockcandy is going pretty well; I seem to always get attention on the pieces I write, so that's fun at least. In terms of my personal writing, I am getting back into that too. It's still slow going, which is frustrating sometimes. I have bursts where I just sit there and write, and it feels really awesome, but they're few and far between. However, I'm writing regularly, almost daily, so that's good. Everything is a little slower than usual, but I'm writing, and that's the best part. I mean, ever since I was laid off my writing schedule got fucked up, and sometimes I forget to write at all.

Lately I've been reading a lot of scary stories and relationship advice sites and this site called Cracked because I'm like addicted to articles/YouTube channels about video games that are informative and stuff. I don't know why, but that's the stuff I'm into lately. Ever since the whole Slender Man thing, I'm not really scared of stuff that used to really, really freak me out, like creepypastas. In fact, Meg hooked me up on this scary story reddit (I dunno what reddit really is lol), and I keep going back to it. I'm addicted. I don't read it too close to bedtime, but I love it. It's weird. I also watched this Cattle Decapitation music video that is so gory and disturbingly gross that it's not even on YouTube. I linked to it on Rockcandy. I dunno, it wasn't?that?bad. Ha ha. I don't know what's up with me lately, but I'm not scared of shit. Still not touching horror movies though.

I've always been watching a lot of Attitude Era wrestling with my brother, Pay-Per-Views and old Raws and Heats and stuff. Although I love the current roster and all, I still think that Attitude Era wrestling was head and shoulders above what current wrestling is. The storylines were edgy and pushed the envelope of what they could get away with. It was raunchy, sexy, scary, crazy, and yes, sometimes silly, but it was amazing. It wasn't without its flaws. I mean, sometimes you watch stuff from when you were a kid and you realize how shitty it was. Not so with this. It wasn't perfect, but man, the fans cared?so much, and WWE was forced to be better because they had competition. Sometimes I wish TNA was a viable entity and not just where washed up old wrestlers go to die, because WWE needs a swift kick in the ass in the form of competition.

Sorry, I have some wrestling people on here now, so I may ramble about it from time to time with specificity. Ignore if you choose.

I suppose I should mention this, since one of you (Therese) already knows, and I'm a sucky liar, and everyone else knows already anyway. Eddie and I are kinda...well, I don't know what we are. I suppose the term is dating again, although we only went out once, and it was two weekends ago. That was what the super vague yet satisfied post was about. I could write a whole fucking novel about the events that have transpired since I last mentioned him in July, and if you really want to hear about it, I could post the full story. I don't know entirely what's going to happen, but I have learned that wavering and keeping a dating profile open on the side is not really fair to any attempts at togetherness. I mean, I have never been in this situation before. That's why I read so much. I've become a relationship advice sponge, but I am far from perfect. I can, however, advise you on all of your relationship problems probably. I'm just still trying to figure mine out.?

Lastly, and on a fantastic final note to end this very informative post on, tomorrow Ashley and I are seeing Fiona Apple in New York City. I'm very excited, and a little nervous too, since Ashley and I have never met in person. This is the very best time ever for anyone to meet me, so I'm sure things will be fine. It's going to be a long and absolutely stellar day. I can't wait!?

This has been your Nicole life update.?

Pressure on Australia to beat Iraq, says McKay

(Reuters) - After a stuttering start to their World Cup qualifying campaign, the pressure is on Australia to pick up an away win over Iraq to boost their hopes of reaching the finals in Brazil, midfielder Matt McKay said on Monday.

The Socceroos fell to a humbling 2-1 loss away to Jordan last month to leave them without a win in three Group B matches in Asian qualifying and outside the two automatic finals places.

The loss to Jordan, who have never reached the World Cup, followed a lethargic opening goalless draw away to Oman and 1-1 home stalemate against group leaders Japan.

McKay and his Australia team mates are back in West Asia on Tuesday for the key clash in steamy Qatar, where Iraq play their home matches due to security concerns, knowing defeat could leave them struggling to reach a third consecutive World Cup.

"With the opening games that we've had so far in this group, it's built up the pressure on this game, it's a massive fixture for us and we all know that," McKay told the Football Federation Australia (FFA) website on Monday.

"We need to get three points out of it to really push our campaign back on track.

"We'll be ready, we've done the work and we know what we need to get the result."

McKay, currently playing for Busan IPark in South Korea, could be deployed at left back with David Carney axed after the Jordan defeat and injuries in the squad.

The 29-year-old diminutive midfielder, who was part of the Socceroos side that edged Iraq 1-0 in extra time of their Asian Cup quarter-final last year, was happy to fill the void if required.

"It's a position I've played before and I know I can do a job.

"It's not my favourite position, everyone knows that, but I actually enjoy it when I get an opportunity there, it just makes me a more rounded player."

Iraq have an identical record as the Australians with two draws and a loss from their three games in the fourth stage of World Cup qualifying in the region.

Goal scoring has been their problem with a number of missed chances in their opening 1-1 draws away to Jordan and at home to Oman.

A heavily changed, more youthful side only had themselves to blame for not grabbing at least a draw in a 1-0 loss away to Asian champions Japan last month.

The 2007 Asian champions have trudged back to Qatar from Sweden, where they suffered a 6-0 thrashing at the hands of World Cup hosts Brazil on Thursday with their Brazilian coach Zico expected to ring the changes for the Doha match.

"We left Qatar where it was 35 Celsius, travelled for 10 hours to a place where it's five Celsius and we have to go back again afterwards," Zico told Brazilian media.

"It wasn't the right moment. I wanted to play Wales and they gave me Brazil."

Hurricane Rafael near Bermuda; Paul threatens Mexico

By The Associated Press

MIAMI ? Forecasters say Hurricane Rafael has formed in the Atlantic Ocean south of Bermuda, hours after Paul rapidly grew into a major Category 3 hurricane in the Pacific off western Mexico.

The U.S. National Hurricane Center in Miami said in a 6:45 p.m. EDT update Monday that Rafael's top sustained winds had risen to near 75 mph (120 kph), making it the ninth hurricane of the Atlantic season.

Rafael is centered about 560 miles (905 kilometers) south of Bermuda. It is moving north at 10 mph (17 kph) and forecast to pass near or to the east of Bermuda by late Tuesday.

Earlier, forecasters said Paul strengthened to maximum sustained winds of 120 mph (195 kph) and was 415 miles (670 kilometers) southwest of the tip of Mexico's Baja California peninsula.

Chronic stress during pregnancy prevents brain benefits of motherhood

ScienceDaily (Oct. 13, 2012) ? A new study in animals shows that chronic stress during pregnancy prevents brain benefits of motherhood, a finding that researchers suggest could increase understanding of postpartum depression.

Rat mothers showed an increase in brain cell connections in regions associated with learning, memory and mood. In contrast, the brains of mother rats that were stressed twice a day throughout pregnancy did not show this increase.

The researchers were specifically interested in dendritic spines -- hair-like growths on brain cells that are used to exchange information with other neurons.

Previous animal studies conducted by lead author Benedetta Leuner of Ohio State University showed that an increase of dendritic spines in new mothers' brains was associated with improved cognitive function on a task that requires behavioral flexibility -- in essence, enabling more effective multitasking. The dendritic spines increased by about 20 percent in these brain regions in new mothers, according to her findings.

The stress in this new study negated those brain benefits of motherhood, causing the stressed rats' brains to match brain characteristics of animals that had no reproductive or maternal experience.

The stressed rats also had less physical interaction with their babies than did unstressed rats, a behavior observed in human mothers who experience postpartum depression.

"Animal mothers in our research that are unstressed show an increase in the number of connections between neurons. Stressed mothers don't," said Leuner, assistant professor of psychology and neuroscience at Ohio State and lead author of the study. "We think that makes the stressed mothers more vulnerable. They don't have the capacity for brain plasticity that the unstressed mothers do, and somehow that's contributing to their susceptibility to depression."

Leuner described the research during a talk on October 13 in New Orleans at Neuroscience 2012, the annual meeting of the Society for Neuroscience.

Previous research has suggested that there are a number of risk factors for postpartum depression, including hormone fluctuations, prior history of mental illness and environmental factors such as smoking or low socioeconomic status. One of the strongest predictors, however, is chronic stress during pregnancy, so Leuner sought to create an animal model that could help explain brain changes linked to postpartum depression.

"It's devastating not only for the mother, because it affects her well-being, but previous research also has shown that children of depressed mothers have impaired cognitive and social development, may have impaired physical development, and are more likely as adults to have depression or anxiety," she said. "A better understanding of postpartum depression is important to help the mother but also to prevent some of the damaging effects that this disorder can have on the child."

The researchers exposed pregnant rats to stress twice a day by limiting their mobility on some days and on other days placing them in water. For three weeks after the rats gave birth, Leuner and colleagues monitored the rats.

The animals showed classic signs of the effects of stress, including lower than normal weight gain and enlarged adrenal glands, a sign of high stress-hormone production. The mothers stressed during pregnancy also gave birth to smaller pups.

"And they were not very good mothers," Leuner said. After separation from pups for 30 minutes, unstressed mothers would gather up their babies, put them in the nest and nurse them. Stressed mother rats left the pups scattered around, wandered around the cage and fed the babies less frequently. The stressed mother rats also exhibited more floating than unstressed rats in a water test; animals that float rather than swim are showing depressive-like symptoms.

"These findings in rats mimic some of the symptoms that are seen in women with postpartum depression," Leuner said.

An examination of the animals' brains showed that the rats exposed to chronic stress did not grow the additional dendritic spines in the hippocampus and prefrontal cortex that the unstressed mother rats did. The stressed rats' brains more closely resembled the brains of control rats that had never been mothers.

"We don't yet know what the exact trigger is for the increase in spines in motherhood, but we know that the increase goes away with stress," Leuner said.

She is continuing the work by investigating whether the beneficial effects of motherhood on cognitive functions are also blocked in mothers who are exposed to pregnancy stress as well as whether hormonal factors play a role.

This work was supported by the National Institute of Mental Health and a Brain & Behavior Research Foundation Young Investigator Award. Leuner co-authored the presentation with Peter Fredericks of Ohio State's Department of Psychology.
