Brad Pitt hits the big screen again when "Moneyball" opens on September 23. There is a lot of speculation about how Pitt will fit into a sports movie, but the golden boy isn't alone is his athletic movie pursuits! There have been many big time stars to take a stab at the sports genre. Here are five of the biggest names in Hollywood history to star in a light hearted sports movie.
Brad Pitt - "Moneyball"
Pitt will play Billy Beane, the general manager of the Oakland Athletics. There are several other stars appearing this film, including Oscar winner Phillip Seymour Hoffman and Jonah Hill. Pitt certainly has the look and charm of a guy that can carry this movie. But there are some questions about how the actor will fly with the usual audience for sports movies.
Gene Hackman - "Hoosiers"
"Hoosiers" is the story of a small Indiana high school driving to the state title in the 1950s. It is a feel good story but does have a good bit of drama in it. Hackman appeared in nearly every scene as a tough but sincere coach. Already an established actor when the film came out, Hackman cemented his legacy among fans of sports movies.
Paul Newman - "Slap Shot"
Newman was another legendary actor to appear in a sports film. He starred as a player and manager of a struggling minor league hockey team in this cult classic from 1977. Newman was the only notable star in a movie that mostly featured real life hockey players. Despite his star power, Newman fit right in as the smarmy leader of the Charleston Chiefs.
Kevin Costner - "Bull Durham"
Costner is no stranger to sports movies, particularly about baseball. But his turn as an aging catcher in this light sports romance movie is his best. Costner plays a charming minor league journeyman that tries to win the heart of a local woman while mentoring a young pitching prospect. Costner's role helped make this one of the most highly regarded baseball movies ever.
Al Pacino - "Any Given Sunday"
This isn't as light as the other sports movies on this list but it is definitely a sports movie. Pacino plays the coach of a fictional football team in Oliver Stone's epic. Pacino does a nice job but it is hard to watch this movie due to the length and Stone's choppy directing. This movie never lived up to its promise but Pacino does deliver one of the great inspirational speeches in sports movie history.
