Points To Consider When Choosing An Exotic Pet | Welcome To ...

No longer are exotic pets only available or chosen by rock stars and Hollywood iconoclasts ? everyday folk like you and me are going for them too. People are buying reptiles, exotic fish, monkeys and other animals not usually considered pets. Before you buy one of these pets to satisfy the closet nonconformist in you, here are some things to consider.

Exotic pets are generally not domesticated. They rely on instinct to make decisions, and are not familiar with human interaction and needs. Exotic pets are wild animals and they don?t always adapt to being pets easily. And don?t expect them to respond either to housebreaking.

The exotic pet?s new home is another chief concern ? would it be best to keep it caged inside your house, or can you find a place for it outside the house? You will want to make sure your new pet does not escape back into the wild, so a regular cage or pet home will not do ? your exotic pet?s enclosure needs to closely resemble its natural habitat. And be aware of how your pet of choice normally interacts in its habitat. Monkeys live in troops, with lots of company and social interaction. Locking a monkey in a cage on its own all day is going to make it unhappy, angry and possibly aggressive.

Feeding exotic pets is much different from feeding conventional pets. Not only will their food cost more, it may not be as easy to find as the bagged dog food you buy at the local store. Do your homework before buying an exotic pet ? make sure its regular diet is affordable enough and not too scarce so you don?t end up ordering special food by mail for the next several years.

Pet owners with children need to be wary of the potential dangers their new pets could pose on their kids. As you may well know, children are a curious lot, so if they are left free and accidentally let out your pet python, they could be in grave danger. The fact that a good number of exotic pets are brought to America by illegal means could also spell trouble, due to the increased risk of them carrying deadly and rare diseases.

Exotic pets can be fascinating and adorable pets. There is much debate about whether it is appropriate to take a wild animal out of its natural habitat and force it to become domesticated in a foreign and unfamiliar place. If these pets appeal to you, make sure you have carefully decided before buying one and trying to domesticate it.
