World leaders back Greece, vow to combat financial turmoil

CAMP DAVID, Maryland (Reuters) - World leaders backed keeping Greece in the euro zone on Saturday and vowed to take all steps necessary to combat financial turmoil while revitalizing a global economy increasingly threatened by Europe's debt crisis.

A summit of the G8 leading industrialized nations came down solidly in favor of a push to balance European austerity - an approach long driven by German Chancellor Angela Merkel - with a new dose of U.S.-style stimulus seen as vital to healing ailing euro-zone economies. But it was clear that divisions remained.

"We commit to take all necessary steps to strengthen and reinvigorate our economies and combat financial stresses, recognizing that the right measures are not the same for each of us," the leaders said in a joint statement issued at their meeting at the Camp David presidential retreat in Maryland.

The overarching message from the summit hosted by President Barack Obama reflected his own concerns that the euro-zone contagion, which threatens the future of Europe's 17-country single currency bloc, could hurt the fragile U.S. recovery and his re-election chances in November.

With Greece's political and economic upheaval high on the summit's agenda and stoking concerns over instability in Spain and Italy, Group of Eight leaders sought to calm the situation.

In the first line of their final economic communique, they essentially endorsed calls to broaden Europe's focus beyond German-backed belt-tightening, calling it "our imperative" to promote growth.

Anxious to quell investor fears, the G8 said: "We reaffirm our interest in Greece remaining in the euro zone while respecting its commitments." But leaders offered no specific prescription for extracting Athens from its worsening crisis.

It was unusual for the often-bland G8 communique to single out a relatively small nation. But fears that a political stalemate in Greece would lead to its departure from Europe's monetary union at unknown costs to the financial system and global economic stability have spooked markets.

Greek voters this month toppled a government that had agreed to painfully austere terms of an international bailout plan, and uncertainty hangs over the next election set for June 17.

Spain too has roiled markets by revealing huge bad loans in its banking system as it struggles to rein in its budget while facing recession.

Merkel, increasingly isolated by a French-led push for a more growth-oriented approach, sought to play down the differences, saying: "Solid finances and growth belong inseparably together and should not be put into contrast."

Obama, who has pressed Europe for more growth-boosting measures like those he pursued at home, used his closing statement to remind euro-zone leaders that the stakes were high and there could be "enormous" costs if they failed.

"Growth and jobs must be our top priority," he said, reaffirming that Europe has the capacity to meet the challenge.

Marc Chandler, currency strategist at Brown Brothers Harriman, said: "It is significant that a group as weighty as the G8 backs Greece and reinforces the idea that Europe needs a strong union. It strengthens its hand."

In another move to shore up shaky global growth, the G8 leaders said they would monitor oil markets closely and stand ready to seek an increase in supplies if needed. While crude oil prices have declined by 10 percent over the past month, the threat of tighter sanctions on Iran loom next month.

The G8 said the global economic recovery shows promising signs but "significant headwinds persist."

CASUAL SETTING, TENSE ISSUES

The mountain cabins at Camp David where a shirt-sleeved Obama hosted the G8 leaders contrasted with recent tense meetings in European capitals about a sovereign debt crisis that just keeps getting worse.

The economic communique endorsed a recent political shift away from the budget-cutting austerity that has been championed by Merkel and British Prime Minister David Cameron as the route to prosperity.

Instead it recognized a need to combine budgetary discipline with a growth strategy. This strengthens the hand of newly elected socialist French President Francois Hollande before a crucial European Union dinner on Wednesday to discuss growth.

Cameron, after an early morning gym workout with Obama, said he detected a "growing sense of urgency that action needs to be taken" on the euro zone crisis. London relies heavily on international finance and banking instability would strike a fresh blow to an economy already in recession.

"Contingency plans need to be put in place and the strengthening of banks, governance, firewalls - all of those things need to take place very fast," he told reporters.

European leaders seemed keen to stress that they would stand firm in protecting their banks, after news of escalating bad loans raised the specter that rescuing Spain's banks would crash the euro zone's fourth largest economy.

Hollande suggested using European funds to inject capital into Spain's banks, which would mark a significant acceleration of EU rescue efforts. But there was no direct mention of Spain in the communique or any indication of action leaders would take to combat the financial stresses.

GERMANY SOFTENING ON AUSTERITY

There already were signs of a softening in Germany's austerity stance as the meeting began.

Germany's largest industrial union, IG Metall, struck its biggest pay deal in 20 years early on Saturday. The 4.3 percent pay increase, more than double Germany's inflation rate, will boost worker buying power in the euro zone's richest nation and lift consumption. That is something the United States has urged as a means to bolster overall growth throughout the world's second largest economic region.

G8 leaders also raised pressure on Iran over its nuclear program, which they suspect has military objectives, by committing to a common approach. They pledged to implement sanctions fully against Tehran and indicated they would act together to lower oil prices if needed.

"Our hope is that we can resolve this issue in a peaceful fashion that respects Iran's sovereignty and its rights in the international community, but also recognizes its responsibilities," Obama told reporters.

The Camp David summit kicked off four days of intensive diplomacy that will test world leaders' ability to quell unease over the threat of another financial meltdown as well as plans to wind down the unpopular war in Afghanistan.

After the Camp David talks, Obama and several of the G8 leaders headed to his home town of Chicago where he will host a two-day NATO meeting at which the Afghanistan war will be the central topic.

Take Gaming to the Next Level with Xbox Kinect | A Tech Girl's Life

Xbox Kinect can sense your position, movements, voice and gestures using a unique combination of audio and video sensors. Every action you take and everything you say is converted by Kinect into a series of commands. These commands then drive and direct whatever software is running on the Xbox 360. This software could be a game, an exercise simulation, a live chat session or any other utility software.

The Kinect sensor box looks like a simple horizontal box to be placed above or below your display unit. However, the inner contents of the Kinect are just as sophisticated as the outer appearance is simple. Kinect contains an array of sensitive microphones, a depth sensing system and a camera which are all controlled by the on board software which also seamlessly integrates with the Xbox 360. This onboard software performs complex tasks like facial recognition, voice recognition and three dimensional motion capture. The moving sensors on the Kinect make use of a motorized pivot to sense and track your movements. The only drawback in the initial versions of the Kinect is that the voice recognition feature only works on the systems which are sold in the United States, the United Kingdom, Japan and Canada.

xbox-kinect

Games available for the Xbox 360 can fall into any of the following three categories:

  • Games which don?t require Kinect
  • Games which are better with Kinect, but can be used without Kinect
  • Games that won?t work without Kinect

While buying a game, you can ensure that it is compatible with your gaming system by looking for labels. For instance, games that compulsorily require Kinect have a purple sticker mentioning that. Games that can work even without Kinect simply mention that the gaming experience would be better with Kinect

Xbox Kinect also allows you to conduct a voice or video chat session using the Windows Live Messenger or with the users of Xbox 360. While the sensors in Kinect can tract the movements of six people simultaneously, only the actions of two of these people can be translated into onscreen commands. The Kinect can also work with the Zune Media Entertainment system and games created by a multitude of companies which include Namco Bandai, Activision, Electronic Arts, Square Enix, SEGA, Ubisoft, Konami and MTV Games.

Kinect, which was released in North America on November 4, 2010 and in Europe on November 10, 2010, can be bought along with an entire Xbox 360 console or simply as an add-on for your existing Xbox 360. Due to the popularity of the Xbox Kinect, it has frequently been out of stock at most retailers. However, the hunt for an Xbox Kinect is well worth the effort as you could enjoy a gaming experience like never before.

Games Available for Kinect

One of the games that come bundled with the Kinect device is Kinect Adventures. It is a collection of smaller games which help you understand how to use and enjoy the Kinect experience. While you might not want to play this particular game repeatedly, it does familiarize you with the gaming system and does that very well.

Dance Central is another popular dancing game available on Kinect which can demonstrate the complex abilities of the Xbox Kinect sensors and gaming system. If you?d like to scratch wild animals like tiger of lion cubs behind their ears, Kinectimals is what you should be playing. Kinect Joy Ride is a racing game containing great stunts and full body jumps. While it is a lot of fun playing this game but, it can also get very tiring.

The motion sensors in Kinect sense the movements of not just the arms but each and every body part. For instance, the Kinect Sports Volleyball game detects whenever a player jumps in the air to hit the ball. This is a great new feature which wasn?t available in popular gaming consoles before the Xbox Kinect and provides an amazing gaming experience.

In Summary

With to its ability to detect and respond to full body movements, the Xbox Kinect brings something new and exciting to gaming consoles. Body movements and voice commands could be the gaming experience better than ever in the popular warfare games. As more games take advantage of Kinect, the experience will only get better with time.

The narrow camera angle and the space required to play the games with Kinect could be a deal breaker for some people with less space available in homes. However, with a little adjustment, this gaming device promises to provide a thoroughly entertaining gaming experience.

Whether the Xbox Kinect Console is a sign of the direction gaming will take on windows for computers, only time will tell. However, what we do know now is that the Kinect provides one of the best gaming experiences among all available gaming consoles.

Songbirds' learning hub in brain offers insight into motor control

ScienceDaily (May 20, 2012) ? To learn its signature melody, the male songbird uses a trial-and-error process to mimic the song of its father, singing the tune over and over again, hundreds of times a day, making subtle changes in the pitch of the notes. For the male Bengalese finch, this rigorous training process begins around the age of 40 days and is completed about day 90, just as he becomes sexually mature and ready to use his song to woo females.

To accomplish this feat, the finch's brain must receive and process large quantities of information about its performance and use that data to precisely control the complex vocal actions that allow it to modify the pitch and pattern of its song.

Now, scientists at UCSF have shown that a key brain structure acts as a learning hub, receiving information from other regions of the brain and figuring out how to use that information to improve its song, even when it's not directly controlling the action. These insights may help scientists figure out new ways to treat neurological disorders that impair movement such as Huntington's disease and Parkinson's disease.

The research is reported as an advanced online publication on May 20, 2012 by the journal Nature, and will appear at a later date in the journal's print edition.

Years of research conducted in the lab of Michael Brainard, PhD, an associate professor of physiology at UCSF, has shown that adult finches can keep track of slight differences in the individual "syllables," or notes, they play and hear, and make mental computations that allow them to alter the pitch.

For previous experiments, Brainard and his colleagues developed a training process that induced adult finches to calibrate their song. They created a computer program that could recognize the pitch of every syllable the bird sang. The computer also delivered a sound the birds didn't like -- a kind of white noise -- at the very moment they uttered a specific note. Within a few hours, the finches learned to alter the pitch of that syllable to avoid hearing the unpleasant sound.

In the new research, the UCSF neuroscientists used their technology to investigate how the learning process is controlled by the brain. A prevailing theory suggests that new learning is controlled by a "smart" brain structure called the basal ganglia, a cluster of interconnected brain regions involved in motor control and learning.

"It's the first place where the brain is putting two and two together," said Jonathan Charlesworth, a recent graduate of UCSF's neuroscience PhD program and the first author of the new paper. "If you remove the basal ganglia in a bird that hasn't yet learned to sing, it will never learn to do so."

Once a basic, frequently repeated skill such as typing, singing the same song or shooting a basketball from the free-throw line is learned, the theory suggests, control of that activity is carried out by the motor pathway, the part of the nervous system that transmits signals from the brain to muscles. But for the basic routine to change -- for a player to shoot from another spot on the basketball court or a bird to sing at a different pitch -- the basal ganglia must again get involved, providing feedback that allows learning based on trial and error, the theory suggests.

What remained unclear is what makes the basal ganglia so "smart" and enables them to support such detailed trial-and-error learning. Was it something to do with their structure? Or were they getting information from elsewhere?

The scientists sought to answer this question by blocking the output of a key basal ganglia circuit while training male finches to alter their song using the white-noise blasts. As long as the basal ganglia were kept from sending signals to the motor pathway, the finches didn't change their tune or show signs of learning. But when Brainard's team stopped blocking the basal ganglia, something surprising happened: the finches immediately changed the pitch of their song, with no additional practice.

"It's as if a golfer went to the driving range and was terrible, hitting the ball into the trees all day and not getting any better," said Charlesworth. "Then, at the end of the day, you throw a switch and all of a sudden you're hitting the fairway like you're Tiger Woods."

Normally, you'd expect improvement in skill performance like this to take time as the basal ganglia evaluates information, makes changes and gets new feedback, Brainard said.

"The surprise here is that the basal ganglia can pay attention, observe what other motor structures are doing and get information even when they aren't involved in motor control," Brainard said. "They covertly learned how to improve skill performance and this explains how they did it."

These findings suggest that the basal ganglia's "smartness" is due in large part to the steady flow of information they receive about the commands of other motor structures. It also portrays the basal ganglia as far more versatile than previously understood, able to learn how to calibrate fine-motor skills by acting as a specialized hub that receives information from various parts of the brain and responds to that information with new directives.

The findings also support the notion that problems in the basal ganglia circuit's ability to receive information and learn from it may help trigger the movement disorders that are symptoms of Huntington's and Parkinson's, Brainard said.

Timothy Warren, another PhD graduate working in Brainard's lab, was the paper's third author.

Funding support for the research came from the National Institutes of Health and the National Science Foundation.

How to see the solar eclipse anywhere

Jeroen Frans

Second Life residents watch a virtual presentation about eclipses on Exploratorium Island, in an image by Jeroen Frans (a.k.a. Frans Charming) of VesuviusGroup.com. The Exploratorium is planning a Second Life teach-in during Sunday's annular solar eclipse.

By Alan Boyle

If the weather cooperates, millions of people can witness Sunday's rare "Ring of Fire" solar eclipse ? but what if you're one of the billions who can't? You can still watch the event online.

That's what Alan MacRobert, a senior editor at Sky & Telescope magazine, is planning to do. He's based in the Boston area, where not a bit of the annular solar eclipse will be visible. So MacRobert will be cruising the Internet, looking for a webcast with a stable video stream.

He should have plenty of webcasts to choose from. "There are more popping up as we get closer to the event," he told me.

Sunday's spectacle isn't your garden-variety solar eclipse: Because the moon is farther away from Earth than usual, the angular size of the lunar disk isn't quite wide enough to cover up the sun completely. Thus, at the peak of the eclipse, a thin ring of the sun's bright photosphere will remain exposed around the moon's dark circle.

NASA's ScienceCast explains the why, when, where and how of the May 20 annular solar eclipse.

That's what's known as an annular eclipse, which gets its name from the Latin word for "little ring": annulus. The little ring can be seen from a 200-mile-wide strip of territory, extending from southern China, through Japan, across the North Pacific and over to the U.S. West Coast. From the Oregon-California border, the strip goes across parts of Nevada, Utah, Colorado, Arizona, New Mexico and Texas.

The "Ring of Fire" effect lasts just a few minutes. For about an hour before and after the big event, a partial solar eclipse will darken the sun and then retreat. The partial phase can also be seen to varying degrees from a much wider swath of eastern Asia, the Pacific and North America.

If you're in the eclipse zone, do not gaze at the sun without taking proper precautions. Such precautions can range from eclipse-viewing glasses, to specially designed solar filters, to pinhole projectors. Check out this NASA Web page or this video for the details.

If you're not in the eclipse zone, you're not alone: The U.S. East Coast, South America, Europe, Africa, Australia and Antarctica will be totally left out. And let's face it: Even if you are in the zone,?the weather may not cooperate. That's especially the case for places like Hong Kong and Guangzhou, where millions might miss the annular eclipse due to cloudy skies. "This is monsoon season in south China, so they're going to need quite a bit of luck to have a chance of seeing this one," MacRobert said.

Watching the eclipse via a webcast isn't a sure thing, either. The skies might be clouded over at the camera location. There could be technical difficulties. And even if everything works, the webcast could freeze up if the video server becomes overwhelmed with traffic. That's why MacRobert is planning to play the field, and why you'd be best advised to do the same. Here are a few of the options for Sunday eclipse views over a computer screen or smartphone:

Slooh Space Camera:?The Slooh website has organized a series of webcasts from Japan, California, Arizona and New Mexico, accompanied by commentary from Astronomy Magazine columnist Bob Berman and Lucie Green, a BBC commentator and solar researcher at University College London's Mullard Space Science Laboratory. The show gets started at 5:30 p.m. ET Sunday, when the eclipse will be just getting good in Japan. Prime time for the webcasts from the American West will kick in around 8 p.m. ET. For more, check out Slooh's news release.

Eclipse Live from Fujiyama: Panasonic is planning a solar-powered webcast from high atop Japan's Mount Fuji, which is inside the track of annularity. The team will charge up batteries from an array of electricity-generating solar cells at a base camp, then carry the batteries up to the camera site. Video coverage via Ustream is due to start up at 5 p.m. ET. This YouTube video previews the event. For updates, check out the project's Facebook page and Twitter stream.

Hong Kong Observatory: The webcast from Hong Kong is due to begin at 5:41 p.m. ET.

Live-Eclipse: Japanese eclipse-chasers plan to be webcasting via Ustream at 6 p.m. ET.?

More from YokosoNews:?This page from the Japanese news site lists lots of webcasts, generally beginning at 5 p.m. ET or later.

More from Ustream:?Do a search on "eclipse" and you'll find all sorts of Ustream goodies, from 5 p.m. ET onward. One user is promising a video stream from the northern tip of Taiwan starting at 4:50 p.m. ET.

AstroBob's viewing guide:?Duluth photographer Bob King provides a vivid guide to the phases of an annular eclipse and also links to AstronomyLive.com as a potential source of webcasts.

University of North Dakota: UND's SEMS (Sun Earth Moon Systems) team is organizing an eclipse webcast from Shasta College in Whittier, Calif.

Scotty's Sky:?Skywatcher Scotty Degenhardt is promising an unconventional webcast of the annular eclipse via his iPhone from Area 51's "Black Mailbox," a popular gathering place for UFO fans in the Nevada desert. The show is set to start at 8:10 p.m. ET. Check out Degenhardt's website for the details.

Exploratorium in Second Life: Speaking of "unconventional" ... San Francisco's Exploratorium science center is planning to provide information about the eclipse in the Second Life virtual world. If you're a Second Life resident, set a course for Exploratorium Island.

If you're wowed by webcasts, stay tuned: There'll be another big event on June 5, when the planet Venus makes a must-see transit across the sun's disk; and again on Nov. 13, when a total solar eclipse takes place.

Are there any annular eclipse webcasts I'm missing? Pass 'em along in the comment section below.

Honda recall: Acura TL sedans have potential fluid leak

Honda recall involves nearly 53,000 Acuras from 2007 and 2008. Deteriorating power-steering hoses sparked the Honda recall.

The Acura logo is seen during the Chicago Auto Show in 2008. A new Honda recall involves nearly 53,000 Acura TLs from 2007 and 2008, because of a potential leak in deteriorating power steering hoses.

Acura says there are some 52,615 cars affected by the recall in the U.S. alone.

According to the automaker the power steering hoses on the affected cars may have deteriorated over time, causing a fluid leak to develop.

Leaking power steering fluid could lead to loss of power steering assistance. Furthermore, if the fluid leaks onto a catalytic converter or other parts of the exhaust system it may result in smoke or, in the worst case, fire.

Acura is making the announcement to encourage owners to take their cars to an authorized dealer as soon as they receive notification of the recall directly from the automaker. Mailed notification to customers will begin in June.

The National Highway Traffic?Safety?Administration (NHTSA) is yet to list the latest Honda recall on its website but concerned TL owners can gather more information by visiting the webpage www.recalls.acura.com or by contacting Acura on (800) 382-2238 and selecting option 4.

How Authors Can Sell Books Speaking at Schools and Libraries ...

Author, publisher, educator, Barbara Techel speaks with Lynn Serafinn about a lucrative avenue for public speaking and book sales that is not always explored by authors.

Authors are always looking for new ways to promote their books. While I specialise in online promotions, there is certainly a need for authors to know how to promote and sell their books ?in person? to their potential readers. In the past, many authors have depended upon book signings at book shops, but in this day and age, with millions of new books coming onto the market every year (Google estimates there are 130 million unique titles currently in publication, and others say even this figure it?s far too low), it?s getting harder and harder for authors to get their books into bookshops.

So are there any unexplored avenues for book sales authors many not yet be exploring?

Author, publisher, educator, Barbara Techel thinks so. Barbara is the author of several children?s books including the award-winning Frankie, the Walk and Roll Dog, which is based upon the life of her dog, Frankie, who moves about in a doggie wheelchair owing to having contracted disc disease that caused paralysis. Since 2007 Barbara and Frankie (who is in a doggie wheelchair) have shared their positive and inspiring messages with thousands of children and adults at schools and libraries around the United States.

Having had wonderful success with this, Barbara wrote a book called Class Act: Sell More Books Through School and Library Author Appearances, with the aim of inspiring other authors to connect directly with their audiences and experience the enriching rewards of speaking at libraries and schools.

I recently interviewed Barbara on my radio show The Garden of the Soul, and was mightily impressed with the wealth of information she shared with my audience. In fact, the show ran much more like a teaching webinar than a radio broadcast. I was so impressed with her information, I wanted to make sure my Spirit Authors audience listened to the broadcast. You can hear it (or even download it) by the podcast player below:

If you cannot see the player on your screen, CLICK HERE to listen to it on the BlogTalkRadio website.

    During the interview, Barbara shares:

    • how to find, pitch and book appearances at schools and libraries
    • how much to charge for your talk
    • how to promote your event
    • how to plan and prepare your most effective speaking approach
    • what to include in your presentation and tweak it to appeal to various audiences
    • how to arrange and fulfill book orders that result from your talks
    • how to use the modern technology of Skype to reach classrooms everywhere (a really novel idea, no pun intended)

While Barbara?s experience is mainly in the area of children?s non-fiction books, and her audience is primarily school children, I do believe all you authors out there whose books are not specifically in the children?s market can equally gain a lot of valuable ideas from this interview, so do give it a listen. After all, you are creative! Tweak Barbara?s ideas and make a brand new marketing campaign for yourself. :-)

Third party group gives up seeking a candidate

(AP) ? A private organization established to run a third-party candidate in this year's presidential elections has thrown in the towel, saying no one mustered sufficient support for such an effort.

Kahlil Byrd, chief executive officer of Americans Elect, said in a statement that under the rules his group approved for an online primary, the process was ending Tuesday.

Third party presidential candidacies have rarely succeeded in U.S. politics, and Americans Elect had hoped to conduct the "Americans Elect Online Convention" this June.

But Byrd said that "as of today, no candidate has reached the national support threshold required" to enter the online convention. He added that there still is "an almost universal desire among delegates, leadership and millions of Americans who have supported AE to see a credible candidate emerge from this process."

The group was counting on a flood of candidates to compete for its valuable ballot space. To ensure someone credible emerged in the end, the group's bylaws required prospective nominees to demonstrate support up front.

Established political and business leaders needed to get preliminary votes of support from at least 1,000 people in each of at least 10 states; lesser-known people faced a bar five times higher.

To date, a draft movement for Republican Ron Paul was the closest. Of declared candidates, former Louisiana Gov. Buddy Roemer was the leader but still more than 4,000 votes shy.

Americans Elect canceled three rounds of voting that was to precede a national online convention. Now organizers are trying to figure out what to do next.

Cohen up to satirical tricks again in "Dictator"

NEW YORK (Reuters) - As the Arab Spring resulted in the deaths of thousands and the ousting of Middle Eastern leaders last year, comedian Sacha Baron Cohen, disguised by a fake beard and accent, was filming his latest movie portraying a hated North African dictator.

Was it sheer Hollywood happenstance, calculated irony or comic genius? His co-stars, including Sir Ben Kingsley think the latter, and audiences can decide for themselves on Wednesday when "The Dictator," debuts in U.S. theaters.

Cohen plays fictional General Aladeen, the dictator of a made-up North African country, Wadiya. He is an insecure and idiotic leader who kills for the slightest offenses, believes in discarding female babies and counted North Korea's Kim Jong-Il among his friends.

The actor's brand of comedy is satire, and like his "Borat: Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan" and "Bruno," "The Dictator" means to shed light on racism and stereotyping across cultural boundaries.

Oscar-winner Kingsley, who portrays Aladeen's equally vicious uncle and nemesis Tamir, told reporters that the timing of filming last year during the Arab uprisings can be attributed to Cohen's comedic genius rather than an attempt to capitalize on those events.

"Sacha ... has his finger on so many pulses, politically, socially, which makes him the greatest comedian," Kingsley said. "(The Arab Spring) was present in the media everywhere and that was thrilling for us. We weren't in a vacuum. We were political satirists in a very real and definite context.

Cohen has made several appearances promoting his film but just as he did with "Borat" and "Bruno," he does so only as his character in uniform and typically with an entourage of beautiful women armed with fake machine guns.

"I want to thank the United Nations for their brave inaction over Syria," Cohen, as Aladeen, told reporters at a recent news conference in New York to promote the film. "Thirteen months and still no Security Council resolution. You guys are amazing. You have done next to nothing for the Syrian people, but remember, you can always do less."

    MISUNDERSTOOD?

To be sure, Cohen's comedy can be fearless and in some circles, it seems provocative. And Kingsley expressed some concern for his safety.

"Sadly, the world is populated by some very strange people. I think that anyone who sticks their head above the parapet takes a certain risk," he said.

Jason Mantzoukas, who plays Nadal, the closest thing Aladeen has to a friend, is less concerned.

Referring to a scene in 2009's "Bruno," Mantzoukas said, "Remember, you're talking about a man who put himself into a cage fight in the south and started having gay sex with someone, which caused a near riot."

In fact, Mantzoukas believes the risk is what makes Cohen's over-the-top comedy work. "Borat," which looked at topics including racism in America, was a smash hit at box offices and raked in more than $260 million. "Bruno," Cohen's look at homophobia, had a global haul of $138 million.

So far, reviews for "The Dictator" are mostly mixed with the movie scoring a 59 percent positive rating at website moviereviewintelligence.com, which aggregates critical reaction.

"One of the things that makes Sacha amazing is he is willing to go to a place that provides a sense of danger that's shocking and surprising," said Mantzoukas. "What makes a lot of it work is the surprise of it, that literally, ?I can't believe this is happening right now.'"

For his part, Kingsley compared Cohen to one of the most beloved comedic actors ever, silent film star Charlie Chaplin.

Kingsley said "The Dictator" recalled for him, Chaplin's Oscar-nominated performance in 1940's "The Great Dictator" which predated the U.S. involvement in World War Two.

"I feel it's a great privilege for me to be with the Charlie Chaplin of the 21st century," said Kingsley.

    Exercise may Reduce Hypertension Risk

    ?

Moderate exercise and increased cardiovascular fitness may help reduce risk of developing hypertension in people with family history, reveals study published in Hypertension.

In a study of more than 6,000 people, those who had a parent with high blood pressure but were highly fit had a 34 percent lower risk of developing high blood pressure themselves, compared to those with a low-fitness level who had the same parental history.

?Understanding the roles that family history and fitness play in chronic diseases is critically important,? said Robin P. Shook, M.S., study lead author and a doctoral graduate student in the Arnold School of Public Health at the University of South Carolina in Columbia. ?The results of this study send a very practical message, which is that even a very realistic, moderate amount of exercise ? which we define as brisk walking for 150 minutes per week ? can provide a huge health benefit, particularly to people predisposed to hypertension because of their family history.?

Previous research indicates that parental history accounts for about 35 percent to 65 percent of the variability in blood pressure among offspring, with varying levels of risk based on which parent developed it and the age of onset.

Researchers followed a group of 6,278 predominantly Caucasian adults 20- to 80-years-old for an average 4.7 years. The participants were patients of the Cooper Clinic, a non-profit organization dedicated to preventive medicine, research and education in Dallas. Thirty-three percent of participants reported that a parent had hypertension.

When the study began, all participants were healthy, reported no physician diagnosis of hypertension, and achieved an exercise test score of at least 85 percent of their age-predicted maximal heart rate. Researchers determined participants? cardiorespiratory fitness using a maximal treadmill exercise test.

During the study, 1,545 participants reported they had developed hypertension.

    Researchers found that:

    • Combining those with and without a family history of high blood pressure, high levels of fitness were associated with a 42 percent lower risk of developing hypertension, and moderate levels of fitness with a 26 percent lower risk.
    • People with both a low level of fitness and a parent with hypertension had a 70 percent higher risk for developing hypertension compared with highly fit people with no parental history.
    • Those with a high level of fitness and a parent with hypertension experienced only a 16 percent higher risk of developing hypertension compared to those who were fit and had no parental history.

?The correlation between fitness levels, parental history and risk are impossible to ignore,? Shook said. ?This awareness can serve the clinician and the patient, as they work together to find effective and reasonable ways to avoid the diseases that have affected their family members ? in some cases, for generations.?

The research findings may not apply to all people because the majority of the study participants were relatively fit, well-educated, middle to upper class white men.

The findings support the American Heart Association?s recommendations of moderately intense physical activity, such as brisk walking, for 30 minutes or longer at least five days a week.

Car accident seriously injures 3 people in Texas | San Antonio ...

Recently, a Texas car collision left three people lucky to be alive. The accident occurred on April 27 when a driver, out for a birthday celebration, left the Longhorn Saloon on Bandera's Main Street sometime after midnight. Shortly after, a car accident occurred. The woman was said to be driving a 1999 Mustang south on Highway 16 when she rear-ended a motorcycle and crashed into two pedestrians walking along the side of the road.

The pedestrians were seriously injured and taken by air to a San Antonio Hospital. One of them was suffering from a lacerated liver and brain injury. Days later, the man was still heavily sedated and in the intensive care unit. The injuries to the other pedestrian are unknown, though, it was observed that he was released from the hospital by April 30. The motorcycle driver was taken by ambulance to Boerne Methodist. A family member said he had been released from the hospital and was at home recovering from his injuries.

The woman left the scene of the accident but turned herself in later the same day. She has since been charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. Depending upon the results of the investigation, she may be facing additional charges. Authorities believe that high speed was likely a factor in the accident. The woman posted a $75,000 bond and was released from jail the next day.

The accident is still under investigation. The parties injured in this car accident may have a legal basis to file a personal injury claim for injuries sustained as a result of this crash. All victims have presumably incurred medical costs and other damages; therefore, they may wish to assess their legal rights. While a civil claim will certainly not take away the trauma they experienced, it could help them financially as they attempt to recover from their injuries.

Macbook Pro and iMac with Ivy Bridge processors crop up on benchmarks

Yup, Apples are bound to flow beneath the Ivy Bridge at some point, but how much of a performance boost will they deliver? If you're happy to hold onto a little skepticism, then two unexpected appearances on the Geekbench site could offer some early answers. The first purports to be an unknown 'MacBookPro9,1' laptop powered by an Ivy Bridge Core i7-3820QM running at 2.7GHz, which achieved a benchmark of 12252 -- that's around 17 percent better than a current equivalent Core i7 15-inch or 17-inch MacBook Pro. The second benchmark comes from an 'iMac13,2' running off Intel's next-gen Core i7-3770 desktop chip clocked at 3.4GHz, which only merits a score of 12183 because it's hobbled by 4GB of RAM. If you exclude memory and compare only the CPU integer and floating point scores, then you're looking at a roughly nine percent gain over a current 27-inch iMac with a 3.4Ghz Core i7-2600 processor. Now, these benchmarks could be faked, or represent non-final hardware, but the motherboard codes look valid (see the source links) and they generally tally with what we've come to expect from Ivy Bridge: a healthy oar-stroke forwards, but nothing that would frighten the fish.

MacBook Pro and iMac with next-gen Ivy Bridge processors crop up on benchmarks originally appeared on Engadget on Mon, 14 May 2012 05:36:00 EDT. Please see our terms for use of feeds.

Chronicle of a trial foretold: Breivik is following his manifesto's script

Anders Behring Breivik's manifesto includes instructions on what a 'Templar' should do if tried in a European court.

Among the early headlines from the fourth day of the trial of Anders Behring Breivik for the murder of 77 people last July was that, for the first time, Mr. Breivik did not perform his now-familiar clenched-fist salute upon arrival at the court. Several families of Breivik's victims said they found the salute offensive, and his lawyers apparently were able to convince him to stop and avoid undermining his case.

But the drop of the salute is not only significant for its effect on his defense's strategy. It also marks a significant departure from Breivik's playbook: his 1,500-page manifesto. Breivik wrote extensively not only about his own beliefs about the alleged activities of "the Marxist tyrants of Europe" and the mission of the Knights Templar, or "Templars," the group to which he claims to belong. He also wrote a comprehensive set of instructions and guidelines for what a Templar should do if tried in a European court. He appears to be following it to the extent he is able.

Breivik wrote a short section on his salute, which he claims to be "the military salutation" of the Templars. He writes that the salute, which he recommends being performed in a white glove, symbolizes strength, purity, and resistance against "the Marxist tyrants of Europe." Interestingly, he claims the salute has nothing to do with either racist "white power" salutes or with the similar, open-palmed Nazi salute.

While Breivik's manifesto does not mention the salute specifically in reference to a trial, its use at trial fits closely into what Breivik argues is the best way to use trials: as propaganda. Breivik writes that after being captured, "the subsequent court proceedings may present several propaganda opportunities." He adds that "This trial is (from our point of view), not against you but rather a trial against the regime."

One of the key openings for propaganda that Breivik saw is the opportunity to present an opening and closing statement. Breivik includes a four-page sample opening statement, which he seemed to use as a source for his own.?

His sample draws parallels between the quest of the "Templars" and that of Native American leaders like Sitting Bull ? parallels he made on the first day of testimony in his own trial. As the Monitor reported, ?Were they terrorists for fighting for their indigenous culture ? or were they heroes?? Breivik asked the court. ?My acts are based on goodness, not evil,? he added. ?If anyone is vicious it is the Socialists.?

In the manifesto, Breivik also outlines a dress code for Templars, which he says should be adhered to in court. "Our dress uniform ... will be used for the sole?purpose of representing the authority of our military order and tribunal during trial," he writes. The uniform is to include a US Marine Corp dress jacket in dark blue or black, dress pants in the same color, and an extensive set of medals and decorations including epaulettes and Templar badges. Judging from the photos of his appearances in court, Breivik seems to have been following his own dress code as best he can, though he has appeared sans pseudo-military decorations.

In his game plan for Templar trial appearances, Breivik shows every expectation of losing. The heading for his sample closing statement reads: "Closing statement ? last day of trial, after judgment (guilty)." But he also expresses hope that the trial may lead to the introduction of stiffer criminal sentences, and perhaps even introduction of the death penalty, which is currently illegal in Norway.

The trial itself may not end up as anything else than a formality where the goal can be to change the law, forcing the parliament of that country to introduce the death penalty, or harshen the penal laws in other ways. Indirectly forcing the parliament of your country to change the laws will be an indirect victory to our movement because it will provide significant media coverage of our cause and thus will contribute to future recruitment efforts.

Breivik echoed this thinking during his second day of testimony, the Monitor reported.

?No, I don?t want [capital punishment], but I would have respected that,? he said, adding that if Norway doubled the current maximum sentence it would ?serve his cause? and ?prove Norway had thrown their principles out the window."

    HP Officejet 6100 ePrinter

If the HP Officejet 6100 ePrinter ($99.99 direct) succeeds at nothing else, it significantly redefines the features you should demand in an inexpensive inkjet printer. Suitable for both home and office use, it's a good fit in the dual role of home and home office printer, as a shared printer in a micro office, or as a personal printer in any size office. It's also the hands-down winner as budget priced Editors' Choice for any of these roles.

In addition to fast printing with reasonably good output quality across the board, the Officejet 6100 offers both Ethernet and WiFi, along with USB of course. And as with the more expensive Editors' Choice HP Officejet Pro 8100 ePrinter ($149.99 direct, 4.5 stars), the ePrinter in the name indicates more exotic connection options as well, namely: support for printing from iOS devices over WiFi with Apple AirPrint and for printing through the cloud with the free HP ePrint service. The HP ePrint Web site assigns the printer an email address, which lets you print documents by sending them to the printer as email attachments.

The Officejet 6100 also earns points for its 250-sheet input capacity, instead of the more typical 100 or 150 sheets at this price. Not surprisingly, however, you don't get a duplexer (for printing on both sides of the page) and there's only one paper tray. If you want to print an envelope, say, you'll have to swap out the paper in the tray first.

    Basics, Setup, and Speed
At 7.1 by 18.4 by 15.3 inches (HWD), and only 10.6 pounds, the Officejet 6100 is both light enough for one person to move easily, and small enough to share a desk with. Setup is typical for the breed, with an extra, mostly automated, step for registering the printer with ePrint.

For my tests, I connected to a wired network and installed the drivers on a Windows Vista system. On our business applications suite (timed with QualityLogic's hardware and software) it came in at an effective 3.6 pages per minute (ppm). That counts as a more than respectable speed for the price. The somewhat more expensive Editors' Choice Epson WorkForce 60 ($129.99 direct, 4 stars), for example, was only a little faster, at 4.1 ppm.

The Officejet 6100 also scored well on photo speed, averaging 1 minute 8 seconds for a 4 by 6 photo. That's not much slower than the OfficeJet Pro 8100, at 52 seconds, and almost twice as fast as the WorkForce 60, at 2:12.

    Output Quality and Other Issues
Output quality for the Officejet 6100 is at the low end of par for an inkjet overall, but still good enough for most business and personal needs. Text lacks the crispness that you'd get from a laser printer, and I wouldn't even consider using it for, say, a resume. For day to day business use, however, you shouldn't have any complaints unless you have an unusual need for small fonts.

Graphics quality is easily good enough for most home use or for any internal business need, including PowerPoint handouts for example. I saw banding in some full-page graphics, but it was relatively subtle with most color fills, and didn't show at all with some. I also saw a loss of some thin lines, but that's a common issue, and the Officejet 6100 does better on this score than many printers. Colors in photos were a little oversaturated, but roughly a match overall for the low end of what you'd expect from drug store prints.

Ultimately, the Officejet 6100 offers a lot to like. It?s fast for both business applications and photos, it delivers reasonably good quality across the board, and it offers a higher paper capacity than most printers at this price. It also lets you share the printer over a network, print from iOS devices with AirPrint, and print from anywhere and any device by sending documents as email attachments. All this adds up to making the HP Officejet 6100 ePrinter a strong contender as either a personal printer or shared printer at home or in a micro office, and also makes it Editors' Choice.
